SYNTAX


Uses  of  SINGULAR VERB : -

  • Rule 1:- 

  singular subject = singular verb

Ex:- He goes, she comes,

  • Rule 2:-

Noun(N)+ Preposition (P) + Noun(N) +Verb

EX:- The coast of production of consumer goods in all Countries is increasing.

  • Rule 3:-

The number of + PN + S.V

Ex:- The number of boys is increasing.

  • Rule 4:- 

The Percentage + Of + PN + S.V

Ex :- The Percentage of failure is small.

         The Percentage of good persons is very high.

  • Rule 5:- 

Singular Collective Noun + Of + P.Noun + S.V

A set, A series, A team, A batch, A band, A herd, 

A Bunch, A flock, A group, A class 

Ex:- A set of Pens has been purchased.

        A team of Players has been selected.

  • Rule 6:-

Uses of singular verb either existing of Plural Noun

If Subject is in form of:-

 Weight, Measures , Amount, and Distance.

Ex:- Fifty kilometers is a long distance.

        Thirty tonnes of coal is enough for me.

  • Rule 7:-

If subject is ; The name of person, countries or title of books than singular verb is used.

Ex:- The USA is a great country.

 Lamb`s Tales from Shakespeare is widely read.

  • Rule 8:- 

Uses singular verb in Hyphenated Expression case. 

Like:- Noun + Preposition + Same Noun

Just like – Row upon Row, ship after ship.

Ex:- Row upon row of dedicate green looks so beautiful.

        Ship after ship is sailing by.

  • Rule 9:- 

If subject is Noun-Equivalent( Infinitive/ gerund/ phrase/

clause.)

Than uses of singular verb.

Ex:- To walking is healthy – Infinitive

        Walking is a healthy exercise – Gerund

        How to do it is a problem – Phrase

       That he is poor is known to me – Clause

  • Rule 10:-

If subject is Distributive Pronoun

( Each, everyone, either, neither, every) than verb is singular.

Ex:- Each of them has gone.

      Neither of the two views is good.

Each man and Each woman is of the same opinion.

NOTE:- if EACH is used after the Plural Noun/Pronoun than verb is Plural.

Ex:- we each wish to rise.

        The wheels each have twelve spokes

  • Rule 11:-

If subject is Indefinite Pronoun 

Like:- Everyone, Anyone, No-one, Someone, Nobody and Somebody. Than Verb will be singular.

Ex:- Everyone knows him.

       No-one knows him.

       Someone has said so.

  • Rule 12:- 

If subject is Parcel Subjects, than verb will be singular verb.

EX:- Bread & better is a rich food.

Horse and Carriage is waiting at the gate.

Pen and ink is requires for me.

  • Rule 13:- 

If Subject is adding with As well as, and not with, together with, along with, in addition to, no less than, rather than, more than, like, unlike, but, except, besides, including or excluding.

Than verb will be singular.

Ex:- The thief as well as his sons, was arrested.

        He, rather than his victims, was really unhappy in 

           the end.

      She, no less than you, is responsible.

  • Rule 14:-

Nothing But + Noun + S.Verb

Ex:- Nothing but snow is seen.

         Nothing but trees is seen.

        Nothing but memory remains. 

  • Rule 15:-

If Singular Noun is divided by :- Or, Nor, Either….or, Neither…nor , than Verb will be Singular.

Ex:- Neither beauty nor duty is an armour against death.

Either rain or storm is to come.

But If Plural Noun or Pronoun will divided by 

Either…or, neither…nor than verb will be Plural.

Ex:- Neither men nor women have come.

Either you or we have to do it.

  • Rule 16:- 

In case of  multiplication relationship in mathematics 

Like:- six times four or thre times two than verb will be Singular.

Ex:- Five times four is twenty.

      Six times four is twenty four.

  • Rule 17:-

If uses of Adjective quantity like:- Much, More, Little or less than verb will be singular.

Ex:- Not much has been done.

Much more is still to be done.

Not much has been done.


 

Uses OF Plural Verb

  • Rule 18:-  

If Adjective is use like Noun and person, thing related to each other than Plural verb will be use either subject is singular.

Ex:- The rich are happy.

The honest are poor.

The virtuous are blessed.

The blind do not receive light.

  • Rule 19:-

If “ONE OF” is use in the sentence and Noun/Pronoun is coming after OF than it assumed to Antecendent.

And verb will be plural.

Ex :- She is one of those who do not accept this view.


  • Rule 20:- 

in case of Modal auxiliary verb:- 

 Can, will, may, must, shall, should, would, ought, Plural verb Will use.

Ex:- I can go.

We must go.

They will go.




              In Exception Case

  • Rule 21:-

Need Not/ Dare Not act as plural verb.

But if ‘NOT’ is not come after Need/Dare

Than it acts as a main verb. 

For Ex:- She dare not appose me.

He needs. They need

He dares. They dare.

  • Rule 22:-

Indifinite number/ quantity + of + Noun

A number of, a lot of, lots of, heaps of plenty of a quarter of, Two-third of, 3-4th of, most of, some of, mass of, majority of, minority of, part of, percent of, proportional of, all of, none of, both of, rest of remainder of, a total of, half of, many of, much of, a good deal of.

Singular/ plural verb will be used according to the noun which come after the ‘OF’ from all those word.

Ex:- A number of boys are playing.

A quarter of it is bad.

A quarter of them are goof.

Two third of the site is unproductive.

Two third of the sites are unproductive.

About 50% of the votes have been polled.

  • Rule 23:-

A  Number of + P.N + PV

Ex:- A number of boys have participated.

The number of + PN + SV

Ex :- The number of boys is increasing.

  • Rule 24:-

If Collective Noun is used with Singular Verb and Pronoun( it/ its)  but if collective noun act as a single body.

Ex:- The jury has given its verdict.

But If collective noun represent as a individual members or units, than Plural Verb and Pronoun (them/ their) is use.

Ex:- The jury were divided in their opinion.   

  • Rule 25:- 

Plural Verb is used with Some word like Scissors, Shears, and Trousers but if these word come with pair like :- A pair of Scissor, A pair of trousers, A pair of shears  than Singular Verb will be used.

Ex:- My scissors are lost.

A pair of scissors has been lost.

Your trousers are very loose.

A pair of trousers is on sale. 

  • Rule 26:- 

In case of S.Verb Many + a/an + S.Noun + Singular verb

                         OR,

More than + one + S.noun + Singular verb

Ex:- Many a man was killed.

More than one boy was absent.


In case of Plural Verb:-

More + Plural Noun + than one + Plural Verb

Ex:- More books than one have been bought.

  • Rule 27:- 

If None, Any, All, As follow, as concern, as regards 

these words are used in verb with plural contable noun/Pronoun 

than we will use either Singular or Plural Verb.

Ex:- None of these rooms was comfortable.

None of these rooms were comfortable.

Any of these rooms was comfortable .

Any of these room were comfortable. 

But if these words are used with uncountable noun/Pronoun than Singular Verb will be used.

Ex:- None of this money is yours.
